Basics of OLED Smartphone Screens

( OLED )We are used to LED, which if you remember stands for Light-Emitting Diode.The ‘O’ on OLED just means Organic thus the name,Organic Light Emitting Diode!

LED’s are semi-conductor devices that emit visible light when electric currents are passed through them. The ‘O’ part of OLED refers to the organic layers.
OLEDs work the same way as conventional diodes and LEDs, but instead of using layers of n-type and p-type semiconductors, they use organic molecules to produce their electrons and holes.
There are six various components in a simple OLED of which the organic layers,in this case two and not three are part of and sandwiched in between.They are the emissive layer and conductive layer.From the top they follow as; seal,cathode,emissive layer,conductive layer,anode then the substrate.Note that at the emissive layer is where the light is produced.
Next you need to know why these OLEDs talk is in existence and looking at advantages and disadvantages brings it home.Let’s have a look.
Advantages of OLEDs
1.They are lighter,thinner and more flexible.
-OLEDs don’t need backlighting. This means that the display will be thinner and lighter.Display panel can be laid on plastic and not glass giving it greater flexibility.
2.They have a greater black level.
-OLEDs have the ability to turn off individual pixels completely.When this happens they give a perfect black.

3.Have more impresive picture quality.

-They don’t leak light so you can get a genuine black which makes excellent contrast ratios.
4.Have wider viewing angles.
Yes,they’re viewing angles are great although do take on a diffrent hue when viewed from an angle like
Galaxy Note 4 takes on a bluish hue.
5.They have a greater uniformity.
-This uniformity is the consistency of brightness across the screen which unlike the rest is much better.

6.Can help in saving your power consumption.

-The black level would contribute here in that the black doesn’t need to be lit up.In addition,since every pixel lights up on its own then you can control and regulate as desired.
Disadvantages of OLEDs
1.They are more expensive.
As you may have suspected,this OLEDs take a bigger chunck out of your pockets unlike the other screens.They are more expensive to produce which comes down to the buyer.
2.They may have a greater power consumption.
-If using the entire screen or brightness of your screen is really up there then you’ll probably consume more power.The brighter the screen,the higher the power consumption.
3.Have motion blur.
-The blurring of things that move.Refresh rate is important in reducing motion blur and the current version of OLEDs have motion blur.
4.They have a shorter lifespan.
-Some like the blue OLEDs have a fixed lifespan.This is a demerit especially if you want to put them up for advertising and they are needed to run all day.
5.Unfortunately they have image retention and burn-in.
-Image retention is usually at it’s peak when the OLED is right out of the box.Burn-in is problematic too just not severe unless pushed to its extremes.
OLEDs do have a future inspite of their current disavantages which are being improved on.Phone technology had its disadvantages catching on and there have been improvements since then right?Now it’s smartphones,smartlife so let’s see where OLED technology will get to.
